Zentangles Landscapes

Zentangles have taken Pinterest by storm lately. They are a style of art that includes an overcrowded explosion of patterns and doodles that come together to form an image. They are usually done with sharpie and a stream of conscious flair...but the more I marvel at these meditative designs, the more I have started to see a visual connection to this style of art and that of some African textiles. Both have a strong sense of pattern and design. Both are lively and engaging. This revelation created an "Aha!" moment: What if we combine both? In order to complete this project, students were asked to choose one ecosystem from Africa and create a Zentangle landscape to represent it. They were also asked to hide one pattern inspired by an African textile print in their design. Finally, they watercolored the backdrop to add extra flair. Enjoy these whimsical escapes!
