Music is the art of painting with sound...
With generous support from the music department, we were so fortunate to be able to borrow a wide array of wind, string, and percussion instruments for this project! Students selected their instrument of choice and used keen observation skills to sketch, diagram, and create an accurate, detailed drawing that they transferred, with graphite paper, onto 90-year-old vintage sheet music. After experimenting with multiple chalk pastel tools, students discovered an uncommon technique of applying chalk dust with a dry paintbrush onto their instrument drawings. Then, by using either warm or cool analogous colors, students “painted” on layers of translucent pastel dust, to create gorgeous luminosity, while enjoying listening to classical music that featured each instrument.
