Nevelson Sculptures

Louise Nevelson was a famous mid-century Russian female artist who settled in NYC, where she became famous for developing a unique sculpture style that incorporated familiar and discarded items. As the first “recycler” of her time, her enormous pieces were a collection of small individual compartments, filled with items that created interesting positive and negative shapes. She would then color them all one color, either black, white, or gold. This “skin” of color masked the recognizable identity of the items and reduced them to basic forms.

The students were challenged to create their own unique compartment in a shoe box, with a heightened awareness of positive and negative shapes. After spray painting them outdoors, each  class  composed and arranged their compartments to create one unified sculpture.

Presented here are the unpainted and painted views of each class's unified sculpture.
