Students had fun exploring and interpreting the fascinating world of Entomology through their art. Learning fun facts about butterflies, dragonflies and beetles, students engaged keen observation skills to develop artwork that reflected scientific anatomy. Period 3 students hand mounted real butterflies and did beautiful scientific illustrations. Period 4 students “drew” their dragonflies without a pencil, using instead razor-sharp x-acto knives to create fascinating negative/positive shapes to define their insects. Period 8 created a collection of meticulously sculpted and hand painted beetles, inspired by the live collection of insects from my art studio, that I shared with the class.
