Art is a wonderful forum for self-expression. This project was an invitation for students to communicate their thoughts (from their left side of the brain) and their feelings (from the right side of their brain) in the form of words and images cut out from several different sources to make a collage. Students were challenged to select a topic that they felt connected to. Then, they set out to collect a list of words and images from magazines, newspapers, and printings from the internet. They used their “selfie - portraits” to show themselves deep in thought, as they composed their colorful collages on the inside of grocery brown paper bags that they painted. These pieces were created at home during online schooling and so beautifully reflect their authentic feelings, during a time of crisis in our world.
