Rice Paper Batik Birds
Batik is a style that has been a popular form of art in Asia, the Middle East and India for over 2000 years! Traditionally, it's done by dying silk and sealing the colors with wax. Several layers are usually applied to create a range of colors. It is through this layering that a rich and unique texture is produced. These beautiful pieces were created with a modern twist. Students used Japanese Rice paper as a base, watercolor as a dye and melted wax to help seal lighter colors in. Students learned how to work from light to dark and plan out a piece from start to finish. When this process was completed, the wax was ironed out to reveal these beautiful designs. This time consuming process took a lot of patience but the results were well worth the wait!
